Essential Content Writing Tips for Beginners

  1. Always Start with Keyword Research

Before you begin writing your content, I recommend you start with keyword research. Why’s this crucial?

To put it to you straight, this is needed so you don’t waste your time creating content that you will not rank for.

Smart marketers understand that they must do their homework before writing. It’s important to know what people are searching for when online.

If you don’t know what your target audience is looking for how do you know what type of content to create. The right keywords can help you reach higher in the search results.

For example, different niches have different keywords, and some rank higher than others in search engines.

That’s because when users look up a particular topic online, they mostly type in specific words.

Keyword research before writing content

Luckily, we now live in a tech-savvy era. So, you can find free keyword research tools online to get you started. However, I’ve noticed that most beginners don’t know how to use these tools.

I recommend typing a topic you want to write about in google search engine.

The best content writing tips for beginners starts with keyword research.

You will find keywords and similar content to what you want to write on the first page. Check the keywords used and figure how to tweak them into your content.

Let me give you an example of what I’m talking about!

Google Keyword Research

Go to google and type in the search “how to create a travel blog”.  This is what happens when people are searching for information online.  They type in keywords that best describes what they are looking for.

If your niche is travel blogging then these keywords may work for you.

However, you don’t know how competitive those words are so you must do research. And there are keyword research tools to help you do this.

Also, you may want to consider investing in some reading material and courses to help you understand the importance of search engine optimization.

Learning the difference between On-page SEO to Off-page SEO will help you to effectively create a marketing strategy that will drive traffic to your sight as well as build a brand.

  1. Create an Outline for Your Post

Creating engaging content doesn’t require you to dive straight into writing. I always advise bloggers, especially beginners, to start with an outline. I like to create my outline a little different from most.

Outlines will help you visually see the layout of the content as well and the order of the topics.

Here is an example

Blog Content dOutline

An outline should include the title, subheadings, and conclusions. You might also add FAQs in your outline if necessary.

An outline works like the framework of your work. It creates a proper foundation for your content to write smoothly and expertly.

Even in construction, the workers must build a strong foundation for a building to withstand. In this case, an outline guides your writing, giving it proper flow.

Are you curious as to how you will come up with an outline.  Here is a tip for you.  If your goal is to get on the first page in google then why not look at the websites that are ranking number for the same keywords.

This is one way to get ideas however this is not the only way.  You can look at other sites that have similar domain authority as you and follow the structure of those posts.

Either way your goal should be to create a better content than the one that is ranking number.

  1. Create Content that Produces Comments

Do you want to stand out from other content creators? Well, I suggest creating engaging content. I’m sure you know this already. However, I can’t stress it enough.

Engaging content has a particular format structure. And here are a few ways to get people to leave comments.

Blog Comments

4. How to get people to leave comments

If you are not getting comments on your website you may want to apply some of these tips I’m about to share with you.

Aside from being a new blogger, it is common to not see many comments due to the lack a consistent traffic on your site.

You may find that people will land on your site and not leave comments.  Here are some tips to persuade people to engage with your content.

1. Ask questions that prompt a response
2. Give a Call-to-Action
3. Ask people to leave a comment
4. Tell a tearjerker story
5. Offer a Freebie in exchange for awesome comments

Become a problem solver

5. Become A Problem Solver

Business is all about solving people’s problems.  I pride myself on answering my target audience’s questions.

I create content centered around their struggles, their pains and their obstacles.  Once I know that I formulate a questions that will answer their problems.

For example, I created content centered around “How to get free leads online” for your home business.  My target audience for this content were people were joined Multi-level Marketing companies.

So, I began to create YouTube videos showing Network Marketers “How to generate free MLM leads online”.

starting a business

Generating MLM leads is a HUGE problem for this industry.  This is a direct sales business so people approach their warm market first (people they already know) and then they are clueless afterwards.

Not knowing how to get more customers leads to the 98% failure rate in this business.

I helped people to solve one of their biggest problems by sharing my online strategy on how to get free leads online and people leave tons of comments on my YouTube videos.

Even people wanting coaching sessions with me to teach them how to do the same. So, I decided to create blog content on the same subject.

Focus on being a problem solver and you will get more comments.

Content Writing Tips for Beginners

6. Prepare a Powerful Call -to-Action

A call-to-action is a moment in your content where you ask your audience to do something specifically.  It’s a significant element on a site or blog.

Technically, it acts as a signpost, directing the users what to do next. However, you need to make sure that you write a clear call to action to direct your readers better.

A call to action makes sure that your visitors achieve a specific task.

This may sound weird however, you may tell your reader what to do.  People that visit your site do not automatically know that you want them to be on your email list.

They are not familiar with your marketing strategy so you have to tell them the next step.

A CTA, short for call-to-action may sound like this.

“If you just started your online business leave me a message in the comments section and tell me the name of your website”.

Proof Read Blog Content

Now, if your business is about helping people to grow their blog then tell me how many people will leave their business name and link to their site.

I’m guessing every person that visits that page will do it.  It is a compelling CTA that benefits the reader and NOT you.

Do more call-to-actions like these and see an increase in your comments.

This kind of content will most likely attract visitors to leave comments for you. But to achieve this, I recommend researching trendy and hot topics within your niche.

Also, follow the tips above by thinking outside the box. By doing so, people will most likely visit your blog or site and want to engage with your content.

Crate the Best Blog Headline

  1. Hook’em with a Killer Headline

The headline. This is where I mostly spend my research time. The intention is to create a catchy and engaging headline that will influence visitors to click on my content.

Kind of like “click bait” that you tend to find on YouTube thumbnail but except the headline matches the content and what you see is what you will get in the article.

For instance, if I’m writing about social media engagement, my title should not just read “Social Media.”

Instead, it should read something like “Here’s How to Get Noticed on Social Media Easily.” See how the words “get noticed” and “easily” change the dynamic of the sentence.

Such a title will most likely grab the attention of my visitors. It will spark curiosity and trigger them to click on my content. As I said, the headline must match the rest of the blog content.

Search Engine Optimization Technique for Beginners

  1. Implement Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Techniques

A secret to creating engaging content is implementing proper SEO techniques. However, a blogger must be conscientious about the techniques used because they change from year to year. They change as per Google’s algorithm.

Now if you are not familiar with SEO and how to use it then you must begin to educate yourself on the basics.

Some of the most effective SEO techniques I use include using relevant keywords and images, and videos in my content. Keep in mind that I have only mentioned two tactics.

We have more than 20 SEO techniques that will work effectively in 2021. I ensure my content ranks on the first page of search engines by implementing them.

Add Google Data and Statistic to website content

  1. Spice it up with Images, Charts & Graphs

Visual content is a crucial part of content writing. By using images and graphs, you help to break up your content, especially if you have lengthy content. Images are catchy, and they make the content interesting to read.

However, this is not the most important reason to use these.  Images help to tell your story or in my case convey a message. What people may not understand in text they can understand looking at an image.

As for graphs here is where you need to listen up.  One of the most important content writing tips for beginners that I always share is to provide proof of the content you are writing about.

Go in depth in your writings by providing statistical data to back up your information.  The fact that you took time out to do research and provide charts and graphs shows that you are being resourceful and that you have knowledge of your topic.

When I see articles that take the time to compare statistic and presents charts and graphs from other reliable sources it helps me to trust this authors work.

Also, the days ranking for a 500 word blog post full of mediocre content is over.  Google wants the best.

Not only should you reference reports, studies and statistics but you so go into details about your articles.  Try to answer every question that could arise from your topic to create an all-in-one Ultimate Guide or Step by Step piece of content that has all the info needed.

Keep this in mind when writing articles.  You can look at your competition to get an idea of what you should be applying to your business.

Whenever I use graphs, charts or images in my writing, I feel like I’ve brought life to my text. That’s why I recommend it as an effective content marketing strategy.

Moreover, using them is an effective SEO tactic that also makes people spend more time on a page.

Blog Paragrahs

  1. Never Write Lengthy Paragraphs

If you want to create high-quality content, refrain from writing lengthy paragraphs. Long paragraphs make your content boring; no one likes reading them. So, an article written like that will hardly get any engagement.

I don’t even remember when I read a blog with a block of text. I recommend breaking up your article into small paragraphs. You are not writing a scientific research paper.

Instead, you’re writing for a wide and diverse audience. Shorter paragraphs make content easier to read and skim through.

  1. Grammarly.com is your Friend

There are plenty of online tools out there that can improve your writing. Grammarly.com is one of these tools. I can attest that it helped me out significantly when I was a beginner.

This is an effective tool that corrects grammatical mistakes in your content.

Can you read an article full of grammatical errors? I wouldn’t. And I bet you know a lot of people who wouldn’t either. Fortunately, Grammarly.com comes to our aid.

The tool can correct a wide range of errors, including spelling mistakes, punctuation errors, and clarity, among others.

It also recommends synonyms if you’ve overused specific words.

  1. Always Create Original Content

Creating original content is a step further from being a beginner. Original content shows that you are a creator not a duplicator.

Therefore, every piece of work you create needs to be your own and make sure that you only use other people’s work as inspiration.

Never copy only use it to inspire your thoughts and ideas.  If you want to create a business where people respect your knowledge and opinion never plagiarize content.

Besides, plagiarism leads to serious consequences, such as dropping your rankings on Google, being sued and just a bad reputation over all.

If you want to write original content, I recommend doing extensive research on a topic. Afterward, create an outline that will guide your writing and develop a draft.

I always do this to organize my work better. It also ensures that I always use my words in all my write-ups.

  1. Create Content with a Purpose

Another vital content writing tip for beginners is to ensure they write with a purpose. That means that you have to plan what you intend to write properly.

You can’t throw content in there anyhow. What do I mean? Your content must have a proper flow.

I can’t be writing about cars in one paragraph and then jumping into water distillers in the next. I must ensure that all the ideas in my write-up are linked.

To do this, you need to make sure that you have a clear idea of what you’d like to write about, then plan your ideas accordingly.

Complete Keyword research before writing

  1. Keyword Stuffing is Unacceptable

You can never throw in keywords obliviously in your writing. Remember what I said? Keywords are a critical part of content writing.

They not only need to be relevant to your topic but also make sense. If you stuff keywords, they will most likely distort the meaning of your text.

Consequently, you should never overuse them. Ensure to insert them in different sections in your content, provided they make sense. The goal is to ensure you create engaging content, and stuffing in your chosen keywords might make it lose sense.

  1. Update your Content Regularly

As a content writer, you need to update past articles regularly. Part of your on-page SEO strategy that show Google that you have current content.

This is an effective tactic because it assures your readers that they’ll find new content now and then, thus making your blog a reliable source. Besides, it helps your website become more noticeable by search engines, which improves your overall ranking.

I will get into more of that in a moment.

Remember Google wants to reward the BEST content and that is fresh, up to date content.

By updating your post with the latest information you are able to create better and sometimes lengthier content and increasing your chances of moving closer page one in Google for your keyword.

Never look at where you are in your content creation as the end all be all once you hit the publish button. A lot of people do not refresh their content.

So you have an advantage over these people.  You always have a chance to improve your ranking with better content.

If you want your blog to become a success, you cannot update content after a year. Every 3 to 6 months is how often you need to update old content.

And yes! In Google’s eyes 6 months is old content.  Stay up to date and a step ahead of your competitors.

You need to make sure that you have at least three posts in a week. Moreover, you must ensure that your posts are relevant to your blog’s purpose.

  1. Link to High Domain Authority Sites

The internet is a world on its own. Therefore, you will find all kinds of content and websites there. But are the sites authoritative? No. Scammers even run some.

So, if you want to improve your website’s ratings, I recommend linking to high domain authority sites.

Fortunately, you can find a lot of reputable sites online. Most of them have these domains – .org and .gov. However, you will also find authority sites such as Forbes.com and Entreprenuer.com.

It’s advisable to link them at least three to four times in your post. This is a technique I always employ to make my site more noticeable on Google.

  1. Choose Active over Passive Sentence Structures

Sentence structure matters significantly in content writing. So, it would help if you exercise caution in your writing. You should mainly use active over passive sentence structures in content writing.

I recommend this because an active voice makes writing more powerful and immediate.

Moreover, it indicates that things happen instead of being talked about, making your content feel more exciting to the readers.

I also realized that active sentence structures move my writing more quickly because I use fewer words. Bottom line? Active sentence structures make writing more concise and efficient.

How to know your target audience

  1. Understand your Target Audience

The key to writing high-quality content is understanding your target audience. That way, you can craft content that they can relate to much easier. In my experience, I’ve noticed that different audiences affiliate with different content.

So, I don’t write my blogs to attract everyone. I write with a specific audience in mind, and doing so helps me craft high-quality content. Remember, writing is all about quality.

If my target audience is digital marketers, my content needs to relate to digital marketing.

I wouldn’t write about medicine if you know what I mean. Doing so helps to craft content a seamless task.

Add Google Data and Statistic to website content

  1. Google Loves Data and Statistics

As a writer, you need to prove to your audience and Google that you’ve based your ideas on facts. After all, we mostly base our write-ups on things that we’ve read, deduced, or learned.

Including data and statistics in my work helps substantiate the claims I made.

Moreover, it allows me to link my content to high authority sites. If you remember, linking to such sites makes a site more noticeable by Google.

Moreover, incorporating data and statistics makes Google consider a site as a reliable source of information. It helps boost your rankings.

  1. Get to the Point ASAP

A Don’t you just hate it when you are talking to someone and it takes that person for ever to get to the point.   An entire 20 minute synopsis is given before you hear the real juicy information.

Online people have a very short attention span and you can easily lose visitors when you take forever to give them what they came for.  S0, don’t hold back.

  1. Allow Someone to Proofread your Work

My last content writing tip for beginners is to ensure someone proofreads your work.  I can’t stress this enough. When you allow someone to do it, they might identify an error you’d have missed when proofreading the piece yourself.

Proofreading helps to identify word order, grammar, spelling, and formatting mistakes.

19. Practice Makes Improvement

Are concerned about your content being “good enough”.   Let’s face it.  Not everyone has the skills to write compelling content however, with a little but of practice you can improve your writing skills.

The best content writing tips for beginner’s and experienced bloggers includes getting better with practice.  The more content you publish the better you will get over time.  This is how your improve your skills and a blogger.

20. Write Valuable Content

What is valuable content? I’ll tell you.  It’s information that solves problems.  It’s as simple as that.  Provide content that helps people get answers to what they are looking for.

As you provide value to your tribe they will see you as an authority and you will attract more people to you, build a powerful brand and of course this brings in more revenue.

21. Know Your Word Count

Remember the days when you could write those tiny little articles that were 400 word count.  Well, not anymore.  If you want to rank and grow your business you need to know what Google wants.

Quality, lengthy content.  Write longer articles that are packed with value.  So, go for the longer articles and keep count of your word count.
